Xactimate is the estimating language the industry runs on. It's also the most-cited skill gap for new adjusters — and the easiest to close before a firm ever tests you. Here's the honest map of what's free, what's worth paying for, and what only field reps can teach.
What you can genuinely learn for free
- The interface and sketch. Building a floor plan and roof diagram, applying dimensions, placing line items.
- Roofing basics. Pitch, planes, waste, and the common roof line items.
- Estimate structure. Building vs contents, ACV vs RCV, recoverable depreciation — the concepts that keep files from bouncing.
- Common beginner errors. Duplicate labor, sketch-to-estimate mismatches, missing related line items.
Video walkthroughs and practice/demo files get you a long way at zero cost. The goal of the free phase isn't a certificate — it's reps until the workflow stops feeling foreign.
What firms actually expect
A firm doesn't need you to be a 20-year estimator. It needs you to turn in a clean, defensible file that a desk reviewer doesn't have to rebuild. That means: your sketch matches your estimate, no duplicate labor, the right value method per the policy, a photo for every line item, and a narrative that explains the scope. Practice to that bar.
When to pay
Pay for training when free reps have plateaued and you need structured carrier-specific or certification work — or when a specific firm requires a cert you don't have. Don't stack paid courses before you've gotten the free fundamentals down. Spend on what gets you deployed.
